5 Tips to Enjoy Moonlight Movies in Jacksonville Beach

I love movies. I also love the beach. Combine the two and you get… Moonlight Movies!

Okay, okay – cheesiness aside, I absolutely adored Moonlight Movies. When Pablo and I found out they were showing Men In Black, we put it on our calendars. I’m glad we did!

We stopped at Larry’s Giant Subs on the way to the movie so we could eat a picnic dinner. We arrived an hour early and staked out our spot. It’s a good thing we got there so early – it got packed! We did fun things while we waited, like play a trivia game and challenge each other at Cut the Rope. Pablo won, but I’m pretty sure he cheats. (Jk, I’m just a sore loser.)

And then it was movie time! I loved Men In Black. It was the perfect combination of funny and cheesy with a pretty interesting storyline. We brought a few drinks to enjoy during the movie. I also brought a gigantic bag of peanut M&Ms.

I encourage you to check out the next (and last) one of the season this Friday, June 1! Be mindful of the tips below and you’ll have a fantastic experience.

  1. Get there early! You want to find a decent parking spot, not to mention a good view of the movie.
  2. Bring something to entertain you while you wait. We just played apps on our iPhones, but it would be fun to bring a game like Catchphrase if you go with a group.
  3. Bring blankets AND chairs. We laid out a blanket to sit on before the movie and sat in the chairs during the movie. There are chairs available to rent if you don’t want to bring your own. I also suggest another blanket for you to use during the movie since it gets a little chilly down by the beach.
  4. Food is a must. I think it’s fun to bring a picnic dinner – just kind of ties the whole experience together. They did have concessions available if you would prefer to buy your food rather than bring it.
  5. Don’t rush home. Everyone rushes home. We opted to stop at Yobe afterwards to wait for the crowd to pass. Take your time – you’re at the beach!

The next and last movie of the Moonlight Movies series this summer is Babe: The Gallant Pig. It’s showing at 9PM on June 1 at the Seawalk Pavilion in Jacksonville Beach. Click here for more info.

Jacksonville Jazz Fest 2012: Blame Beryl

This isn’t going to be much of a blog post. I was planning on heading to the Jacksonville Jazz Festival on Sunday, May 27, to see my favorite jazz singer, Madeleine Peyroux, perform. Unfortunately, the Jazz Fest was cut short because of Tropical Storm Beryl. Go ahead and give this photo of Beryl a nasty look. Yell some mean things at it, too. I’ll wait.

Fortunately, I did see on Twitter that it was awesome on Friday and Saturday. Yay for the people who made it. I’d love to see pictures or hear about your experience – please post about it in the comments below.

I leave you with my favorite Madeleine Peyroux song, “Dance Me to the End of Love”. Here’s hoping she comes back to Jax!

2012 Memorial Day Weekend Preview

There’s SO much going on in Jacksonville this weekend! I’m already tired thinking about my plans. Here’s what I’m up to this weekend. Blog posts will be up next week!

What will you be up to?

6 Things You Should Take to a Theme Park

Theme parks just seem to come with the territory when you’re a Florida native. I went to Disney World more times than I can count when I was younger and my family just finished up our season passes to Universal Studios a few years ago. Want to make it a good day at the theme park? Here’s what you need to bring.

Ziploc Baggies
This is probably the last thing you expected to see on this list, but it’s so important that I put it first. You know those water rides that drench you? Well, if you don’t put your phone and valuables in a baggie, they’ll get drenched, too! (On this note, quick shout out to my friends at WaterproofCases.net. They can help you out if Ziplocs aren’t your style.)

Ibuprofen
I don’t think I’ve ever gone to a theme park without getting a headache. Being out in the heat and sunshine tends to dehydrate me a little bit and ibuprofen is my headache solution of choice. Any medicine you find yourself using for headaches or health problems should be in your bag.

Brita Bottle
Believe me, you’ll thank me for this! As I mentioned, dehydration can be an issue at theme parks. Once you see the price of drinks, you won’t want to buy many. Having a Brita bottle on hand allows you to fill your water bottle up to quench your thirst without breaking the bank. My favorite part? It filers the water!

Hand Sanitizer
Lines get long at theme parks. Keeping a travel bottle of hand sanitizer with you eliminates the need to find a bathroom to wash your hands before you eat. Just scrub your hands down with some hand sanitizer and chow down.

Sunscreen
Remember the sunshine I talked about earlier? It will burn you! Be sure to apply sunscreen before you enter the park and at least one more time while you’re there. I suggest waterproof sunscreen in spray bottles.

Backpack
It’s a theme park. You WILL buy souvenirs. Backpacks are easy to carry around and you can fit all of your souvenirs in them easily.

Another tip: wear tennis shoes. I’ve recently converted to tennis shoes at theme parks. Flip flops have always been my preference, but my feet would always be sore after wearing them to a theme park. Tennis shoes provide your feet with better support. Just pack an extra pair of socks to wear after those water rides!

(This photo is one of the highlights of my life! Sleeping Beauty is my favorite Disney Princess. In 2010, my family visited Disneyland in California, where her castle is the center of the park.)

2012 World of Nations Celebration

My most anticipated event every year in elementary school was the annual class field trip to the World of Nations Celebration. I loved the foreign tastes, the exotic smells, and the diverse cultures represented at the event. As an adult, the thrill hasn’t waned in the slightest. With 38 countries represented, the World of Nations celebrates the diverse cultures that weave together the fabric of Jacksonville, Florida.

My boyfriend, Pablo, is Peruvian. One of the perks of dating a Latino is learning which Hispanic foods you adore. Last year, Pablo introduced me to empanadas at Spain’s food tent. It was love at first bite! I have yet to taste any that compare. Our very first stop at the World of Nations this year was to get some more of those empanadas.

Once we sampled the Latin food (which was incredible, as always), we stopped by the tent of a country that’s near and dear to my heart: Cambodia. I’ve been there twice on mission trips and am always happy to see it represented at events such as this. I spoke with the man running the tent for at least 10 minutes. He was from Battambang, a province I spent about a week in. Sadly, they didn’t have Lychee Fanta, my favorite Khmer drink. Maybe next year?

Our next stop was Africa. Every time we see a djembe (pronounced “JEM-be”), Pablo plays it. I’m fortunate to be with someone who appreciates music and other cultures as much as I do. While we didn’t buy Pablo the $250 djembe he initially played, we did find him a miniature one that cost around $10. It was made in Ghana and has become the perfect addition to his collection of instruments.

We drifted over toward the Middle Eastern area in the center of the event just in time to see the Parade of Flags. This was the first year I’ve seen the Parade of Flags and I honestly don’t know why I waited so long! As people proudly waved the flags of their native countries wearing the traditional garments of their people, I was moved to tears. I wondered what these people and their ancestors had to go through to get to America. So often we take the freedom and gifts of this country for granted. It was a sobering reminder to me that I should appreciate being an American more than I do.

Once the Parade of Flags was complete, we made our way down the row of Caribbean countries and islands. I was finally able to eat the churros Pablo loves! Every time we go to an amusement park or a place with churros, he looks to see if they have churros filled with cajeta (similar to dulce de leche) and chocolate. He was thrilled to finally find some in the Puerto Rico area! Once I tasted them, I understood why he loved them so much.

At next year’s World of Nations, I plan to make a point of focusing not just on the food, but also on the cultural dances and presentations for each country. The thing I’m most looking forward to at 2013’s event is attending the Naturalization Ceremony on Saturday morning. (Also, those Spanish empanadas!)

Funny story from this year’s event: While Pablo and I were in the Peru area, I found a stone owl I loved. I had it in my hand to buy while we continued to look at the Peruvian wares. A woman walked up to me, took the owl out of my hand and bought it right in front of me. I kid you not. Pablo asked the man running the booth if he had any owls similar to the one the woman had taken from me, but he didn’t. Hopefully there will be one next year!
